Today i am trying to Create Template for my Organisation.but before creating i have done two settings with my VM 1. Snapshot 2. RDM let’s see one by one what happend.
Template is a master copy, by using which i can deploye identical Virtual Machine with Less efforts.
1. Before Template creation i have to create Virtual Machine and install OS and then install Application as per my Organisation requirement.
2. Now After creation Right click on VM and Convert to Template. this is simple way to create a template but if i have Snapshot and RDM then what happened.
When you Select this option > Convert to Template your VM will be no more visible in Host and Cluster View. You can see it in VM and Templates View.
1. VM with Snapshot
I have one Powered Off VM > Right click > Snapshot > and take a snapshot.
If you Browse the Datastore you can see the Files like Snapshot and .vmem and .vmtx
Now Lets Create New VM by using this Template and see what Happened with Snapshot.
Provide the Name to the VM
Select the DataCenter and Cluster.
Here you will get a warrning that Copying this virtual machine will cause loss of Snapshots at the destination. it means it will not retain Snapshot but This Doesn’t Mean data will be deleted.
It will consolidate the Snapshot automatically and you will not loss Data.
After Finish it will create new VM
Now Go to that VM > Right Click > Snapshot >
Here you can see that your VM does not have any Snapshot.
Note: It will consolidate the Snapshot automatically and you will not loss Data.
2. With RDM
Now Attach the RDM with your Virtual Machine.
Go to VM > Right Click > Edit Settings > Add New Device > RDM
Now Select the LUN from given list
You Can Select the Mode Of RDM either Physcial or Virtual Mode.
Now Convert this VM to Template.
Now Deploy Virtual Machine from this Template and see what happend with RDM
Follow the Same steps for VM deployment and Finish.
After VM creation you can go to that VM > Edit Settings > and check the Hard disk.
Note: After VM creation RDM will be converted as VMDK for the New virtual Machine.
RDM remain RDM for the VM when you convert it back to VM from Template.
